Anyone looking for an alternative to SalesViewer, Leadfeeder or another visitor identification tool usually has a specific reason: the contract is about to renew, prices have risen, data protection is to become stricter or the team uses only a small part of the functions. This article helps you make the decision properly and plan the switch without a gap in the data. It does not rate providers. Which ones exist is covered in [Visitor identification providers: Leadfeeder, SalesViewer and others](https://whovisit.app/blog/anbieter-besuchererkennung-ueberblick).

## Six questions before switching

Before you request quotes, an honest look at your own usage is worthwhile. Ideally answer these questions together with sales.

1. **Who actually looks at the list?** If only one person looks in once a week, you do not need ten user seats.
2. **How many companies do you identify per month?** Many plans charge by identified companies. The figure from the last three months is the best basis for the new plan.
3. **Which functions are indispensable?** Typical ones are export as CSV, connection to the CRM, notification for particular companies, filters by industry.
4. **Which functions does nobody use?** Contact databases, advertising to companies, chat. If these lie idle, you are paying for them too.
5. **How strict should data protection be?** Do you want to load the script only after consent? Should the IP address not be stored? The basics are in [Visitor identification and GDPR: a sober assessment](https://whovisit.app/blog/besuchererkennung-dsgvo).
6. **When does the contract end?** Notice period and term determine the schedule. Plan to test at least four weeks before the end.

## The switch in seven steps

### 1. Back up the data

Before cancelling, export everything you want to keep: company lists, notes, target groups, filters. After the contract ends this data is usually gone. Check whether you may keep the data at all. Deletion periods apply to personal contact data.

### 2. Install the new tool in parallel

Install the new script in addition, not instead of the old one. The simplest way is in the tag manager with a second tag bound to the same consent. An example of the process is shown in the help section under [Installing with the Google Tag Manager template](https://whovisit.app/hilfe/einbau-mit-google-tag-manager).

### 3. Compare for two weeks

Let both tools run for at least two weeks, so that working days and a weekend are included. Then lay the lists side by side and check samples by hand. What matters is not only the number but whether the hits are correct. Background is in [Identification rate: why the figures vary so much](https://whovisit.app/blog/erkennungsquote-besuchererkennung).

### 4. Transfer processes in sales

Who gets which notification? Which target groups exist? Which fields go into the CRM? Set this up in the new tool before the old one is switched off.

### 5. Adjust privacy policy and banner

New service, new paragraph. Name the provider, purpose, legal basis and retention period. In the cookie banner the service belongs in the right category, usually "statistics". Conclude the data processing agreement beforehand.

### 6. Remove the old script

Remove the old tag from the tag manager or the code from the website. In the browser's developer tools under "Network", check that no more requests go to the old service. Afterwards also delete the old service from the banner and privacy policy.

### 7. Have cancellation and deletion confirmed

Have the old provider confirm in writing that it will delete your data after the contract ends. This belongs in every data processing agreement.

## What to look out for in quotes

**Billing by companies or by visits.** A company that comes ten times a month should not count ten times. Ask how counting works and what happens when the limit is reached.

**Term.** Plans that can be cancelled monthly often cost slightly more, but spare you another switch under time pressure.

**Test with your own data.** A provider that lets you test with your website for two weeks gives you the chance to make exactly the comparison from step 3. Whovisit offers 14 days for one website for this.

You will find the complete checklist of twelve criteria in [Comparing visitor identification: 12 criteria for choosing](https://whovisit.app/blog/besuchererkennung-vergleich-kriterien).

## Frequently asked questions

**Do I lose my existing companies when I switch?** In the new tool the list starts empty. Export the old list as CSV beforehand.

**May I use two tools at the same time?** Technically yes. Legally, both must be named in the privacy policy and banner and load only after consent. Keep the parallel operation short.

**How long does the switch take?** With a tag manager the installation is done in an hour. The comparison needs two weeks, and adapting the processes in sales usually one more.
